Healthcare is in an exciting time with many regulatory changes and an explosion of digital technologies aimed at delivering higher quality care, better access to care and at lower costs. Everything from the business models to the methods of care, delivery is undergoing some level of transformation. Cost + Quality of Healthcare

Healthcare spending has hit an unsustainable level in the U.S. and outcome measures (quality) have not improved comparatively. Since the 1960′s, while all consumer goods & services have increased in cost 8x, healthcare has increased 274x.

Data Sharing + Improved Outcomes

In the US, healthcare is still very much a siloed cottage industry, where any best practices translating to best outcomes at low costs and heightened experiences are sequestered as data within these offices/hospitals/healthcare systems/states or countries.

Lack of Relevant Data Analysis

Successful value-based Health systems rely on timely, meaningful, actionable information. This future model points to an influx of outside data via sensors, patient tracking tools, mobile devices and apps, which require analytics to convert this potential noise into valuable information.

Non-Patient-Centric Business Models

Patient-centric care is demanding more value, convenience, technology and patient empowerment. Equally clear is the message that healthcare reimbursement is shifting towards value-based pay. These two forces create a formidable challenge for healthcare as we know it.

Inefficiencies/Waste/ Variation in Care

The US health sector has grown to an unsustainable $2.9 trillion. By some estimates ⅓ to ½ of this is waste and not offering any value to consumers, coming in the form of repetitive, redundancy or unnecessary services, which ultimately increase risk of harm.

Capturing + Managing Social Factors

The American Journal of Public Health August 2011 published an article showing social factors, including education, racial segregation, social supports, and poverty accounted for over a third of total deaths in the United States in a year. Successful innovations will need to bridge this chasm between traditional healthcare and these other factors.

Lack of Security

Identity Theft Resource Center’s latest 2015 Data Breach Category Summary found that 35 percent of all breaches were found in healthcare. Building a digital future in healthcare means respecting what it takes to create a safe environment for your enterprise and your patients.

Low Provider Supply + High Patient Demand

The argument for the Triple Aim being changed to the Quadruple Aim is due to an estimated shortage of 40,000 providers in the U.S. now, and by 2025 there may be triple that number if something does not change.
